Student Leadership

There will be so many opportunities for our students to develop and demonstrate their leadership skills. This will include opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom.

The aims of our student leadership initiatives are to:

  • encourage active student engagement in learning and the life of the Academy/ Federation and community
  • be inclusive and give students a range of ways to model The Clapham Commitment and to represent their academy, including in the recruitment of staff
  • nurture the skills required to develop responsibility, independence, teamwork and maturity in relationships with students and staff
  • design appropriate curriculum and extra-curricular/enrichment opportunities that are influenced by student voice and choice
  • promote active citizenship by establishing a fully functioning democratic body with real influence in the Academy
  • contribute to whole Academy improvement
  • develop staff: student dialogue, with a focus on improving the quality of education provided.

Student Leadership

Student leadership organisation

Student Forum

Student Forum - The Forum is a key mechanism for discussing and making suggestions about issues of whole Academy importance but which represent students’ collective views. This body will be democratically elected from each tutor group (one per tutor).

The Student Forum be led by the Senior Tutees (one boy and one girl). The Forum will meet formally once per term. It will have an agenda and planning programme to guide its work.

Additional Student Leadership Roles

These students are not elected but chosen by staff and have specific roles.

  • Peer Mentor
  • Buddy
  • Clapham Commitment Ambassadors: these will include Tour Guide, Library Monitor, Innovation Experience Advisors, Enrichment Reviewer, Arts Ambassadors. Other roles may be added during the year.

Each role will come with a job description. This will explain to students what their role will involve. Students can then choose to apply if they feel that the role suits their interests.

Our leadership roles will start towards the end of September.

Surveys

All students will have the opportunity to express their views, suggestions, ideas and concerns about Academy life through the Student Forum. Summaries of student views will also be gathered as required, for example, about enrichment.

In our first year, the termly focus for Student Forum meeting will be research and feedback on:

Term 1 – What is it like to be a student at Harris Clapham? Do we feel safe here?

Term 2 – What is the range and quality of enrichment?

Term 3 – What do we want for Year 8 and what will make our lives better?
