Our curriculum intent for the English department at Harris Academy Clapham builds from the national curriculum to provide our students with an exceptional educational experience that nurtures students' passion for language, literature, and effective communication, aligning with the high standards set by outstanding schools nationwide.

Drawing inspiration from outstanding practices, our curriculum is designed to inspire a love of reading, ignite a passion for writing, and foster critical thinking skills that empower students to excel academically and beyond. We have carefully selected a range of literary texts, including both classic and contemporary works, to expose students to diverse perspectives, cultures, and genres. This enables students to develop a deep understanding of the human experience and explore complex ideas, nurturing their intellectual growth and broadening their horizons.

Aligned with the National Curriculum, our curriculum places a particular emphasis on developing students' language and communication skills. We provide comprehensive opportunities for students to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities. Through engaging activities, creative writing exercises, and purposeful discussions, students develop their confidence, linguistic fluency, and analytical thinking, preparing them for future success in their academic and personal endeavours.

We are committed to inclusivity and diversity, and our curriculum reflects the richness and diversity of our society. Drawing from the National Curriculum's guidance on equity, we select texts that represent a wide range of cultures, perspectives, and lived experiences. By engaging with these texts, students develop empathy, cultural awareness, and a broader understanding of social issues, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the modern world and become active, compassionate global citizens.

Our curriculum incorporates effective assessment strategies inspired by outstanding schools. We utilize both formative and summative assessments to provide meaningful feedback, track progress, and drive improvement. By nurturing independent learners, we empower students to set personal targets, reflect on their strengths and areas for growth, and take ownership of their own learning journey.

Through our curriculum, we strive to create confident, articulate, and culturally enriched individuals who possess a deep appreciation for literature, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to think critically and creatively. By drawing on the insights of outstanding schools and adhering to the National Curriculum, we ensure that our students receive an education that prepares them to excel academically and flourish in the ever-evolving global landscape.
