Design and Technology

Self-belief is at the core of Design and Technology at Harris Academy Clapham. It is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that gives students the knowledge to be able to design, make and evaluate products as well as learn the technical knowledge associated with the subject, such as making a miniature torch will introduce students to the electronics specialism.

This will also include working with computer aided design and manufacture. They will design their torch using TechSoft program which will be cut out of acrylic using a laser. Students will learn how to create a circuit using an LED light and battery.

Each project allows access to a range of different practical learning opportunities with a focus on health and safety, outcomes and processes. Each project allows students to express their creativity and develop an ability to confidently justify their reasons and actions.

Design and Technology has an important impact on everyday life and the wider world. The curriculum is designed to inspire and nurture students’ curiosity and fascination about the history of products and how they have evolved to solve design problems. The subject enables students to synthesise the creative, craft and technological aspects of products which mediate between people and their environment. The subject directs students towards achieving the necessary skills to design and build products which are functional, sensitive to the user, technically viable and creatively innovative. This is achieved through projects involving the manipulation of form, scale, materials and colour.

Design and Technology encourages students to become creative problem solvers, unique, open-minded, and independent individuals who are respectful of themselves and others. The subject will enable students to know more, remember more and understand more about the world around them through the various projects we offer them.

Please see below to read our progression map for design and technology in Years 7 to 9.
